Power outage hits Calistoga

Mar. 17, 2000

A malfunction at a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. substation plunged Calistoga and parts of St. Helena into the dark Thursday evening.

PG&E spokesman Jonathan Franks said the 5:37 p.m. incident knocked out power to approximately 4,000 customers. "It was an equipment failure on a transformer bank at the Calistoga substation,'' Franks said.

A PG&E engineering crew was dispatched to the substation. The crew was able to restore power to about 1,500 customers by 8 p.m. Franks said power was expected to be returned to all customers by midnight.

Calistoga police said they received more than a 100 calls from residents, a few of whom stopped by the station to ask why the town was so dark.
