Third false emergency message on BA flight in one year

Story Filed: Thursday, March 16, 2000 7:55 AM EST

MAR 16, 2000, M2 Communications - Passengers onboard a British Airways flight from Boston, USA to London, UK were given a fright when a technical problem resulted in an emergency message being played over the aircraft's PA system on 12 March.

The 251 passengers were told to brace themselves for an emergency landing into the ocean, an announcement that was immediately corrected by the Boeing 777's captain, but which did nothing to quell the initial shock for passengers.

The incident occurred not long after the flight departed from Boston and represents the third time such an error has occurred in less than one year.

A spokesperson for British Airways said that the incident was now under investigation and that all passengers had been offered a letter of apology by the airline when they arrived at London-Heathrow.
