IRS computer glitch hits some notices sent before Feb. 22

Individuals who gave their tax practitioners ``power of attorney'' to handle tax problems with the IRS need to be aware of an IRS computer glitch earlier this tax season.

A computer programming error relating to powers of attorney resulted in IRS notices and letters being sent only to the taxpayer and not the third-party representative.

What's more, some refunds that should have been mailed to tax representatives were mailed instead to the taxpayers.

The problem affected notices and letters dated Jan. 31 through Feb. 21. The IRS said the information in the notices was correct. However, affected individuals should notify their tax representatives if they received a notice or letter dated earlier than Feb. 22; otherwise, the representatives won't know the notices and letters were received.
