Amtrak Train Derails in Kansas; Up to 30 Hurt

CARBONDALE, Kan. (Reuters) - An Amtrak train carrying about 175 people from Chicago to Los Angeles derailed early on Wednesday in rural Kansas, injuring up to 30 people and throwing several cars from the tracks, an Amtrak official said.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black said the 27-car train, the Southwest Chief, derailed at 2:10 a.m. CST, throwing at least six passenger cars from the rails.

Between 15 and 30 people were injured, but none of the injuries was life-threatening, Black said.

The train left Chicago on Tuesday afternoon carrying about 160 passengers and 15 crew members en route to Los Angeles. It left the tracks near Carbondale, about 18 miles south of Topeka, Kansas.

``We don't even have the wildest speculation about what happened,'' Black said.
