Gas Prices Soaring

Gas prices across northeast Ohio continue to soar. A new survey from the Triple-A Ohio Motorists' Association says the average price for self-serve regular gasoline jumped to a-dollar-53-cents per gallon, over a penny more from last week and an average of 58-cents more than a year ago. Managing Director of Public Affairs William Johnson says the rising prices are the result of months, if not years, of neglect and complacency at the U-S Department of Energy. Johnson also urges Congress and President Clinton to reject fixes like drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge or tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He says the short and long-term solutions depend on an ability to influence OPEC and other oil producers in Mexico and Norway.
