SAL Baldwin Diesel Switcher info. Needed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I am looking for information on Eastern Farmers Coop Baldwin switcher number 606. I believe it is a DS-4-4-600 or DS-4-4-1000. It has a builders number of 740?9 and was built in 1949 for the SAL according to my source. The unit still exists and is a preservation candidate. Any help in identifying the model designation and any other history of the unit would be appreciated.

It took a little digging-the builders number is actually 74889. The locomotive is a Baldwin DS4-4-1000 which was built in August 1950 as SAL 1450. It was renumbered to SCL 62 and was sold June 1981 to Birmingham Rail and Locomotive, who promptly resold it to Benson- Quinn Terminal in Corson South Dakota. It was renumbered 606.

That by the way was the clue, as the serial number in your posting did not exist. The information is contained in "Seaboard Motive Power" by Calloway/Withers (1988) on page 244. A photo of the unit appears on page 28 of the same book.

I will check im my files tonight. You can call me at 914 225 1321 Sunday evening after 8:00 pm eastern time and I will be happy to give you what I have. If you have more info, then E-mail it to me ASAP. I will also post it on the website after it has been confirmed that this indeed is the unit. Photos of the unit may be found in the Broadbelt collection which is available from the Railroad museum of Pennsylvania. Their web site offers the negative collection listing and gives info on how to get the prints.
