Wyoming: UP cars derail at Kemmerer

KEMMERER, Wyo. (AP) - Twenty-five to 30 Union Pacific Railroad cars derailed Thursday afternoon.

No one was hurt, but UP's east-west traffic was interrupted for a couple of hours, according to UP spokesman John Bromley.

Several cars carried hazardous material but none spilled, Bromley said.

While the derailment stopped traffic on UP's main line, a side track was opened a couple of hours later, he said. The main line was expected to reopen early Friday morning, he said.

Officials say the derailment occurred about 12:30 p.m. while one train of cars heading from Oregon to North Platte, Neb., was switching tracks. Those cars toppled over and knocked a separate group of nearby idle cars over. About eight cars of barley spilled.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Bromley said.
