North American Gas Out

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Last year on April 30, 1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it worked. It's time to do something about it again. This time trucking companies and private businesses have decided to make it for three days instead of just one. The oil cartel decided to slow down production to drive up gas prices. FOR WHAT? Most experts predicts prices will continue to increase within the next six months to around $1.80 (I've heard higher) per gallon. WHY?

LET'S HAVE A GAS OUT! Do not buy gasoline from APRIL 7, 2000, THROUGH APRIL 9, 2000. Buy what you need before the dates listed above, or after, but try not to buy any during the GAS OUT. If you want to help, just send this to everyone you know and ask them to do the same. We brought the prices down once before, and we can do it again! Come on North America, let's stand together. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!

This is a great idea, but will only be effective if we immediately follow it with a period of conserving and limiting our use of gasoline. The CURRENT supply problems and increasing prices do not appear to be the result of profiteering by the American petroleum industry. Not buying gas for two days will not send a message to the OPEC countries. Only reduced use of petroleum products will.

My understanding is that the only reason gas is under $5 a gallon here is that it is heavily subsidized by the government, via our taxes. I have no sympathy for those people driving around in SUVs and other inefficient vehicles who are complaining about gas prices. I wonder what would happen if gas was prices according to it's actual cost. Of course, it has been cheap for so many years that people have built homes far from work, etc., and depend on cheap gas to live and work where they do. I'm glad that we considered that when we moved the last time (11 years ago) and I can walk or bike to work easily.
