What are your best/worst memories of prom? Or any other type of formal dance, for that matter.

1930's, High School R.O.T.C. ball - cold weather - gym overheated. I think every girl there had a gardenia corsage. Wow. the aroma was almost over powering BUT - - - - I was in love with the girl with me, so I turned my nose off and had a wonderful time. doug

In my school it was the Commencement Dance in June, part of the graduation week activities... ahhhhh... very sweek memories... all the guys in white dinner jackets, the girls in fancy prom dresses... the dance was held at the best country club in the area...

I was last at that country club for our 30th reunion... a moment of shock came with parking the car and joining the couples heading into the building... or, as I said to my wife: "These aren't the kids I went to high school with; these are our parents!" Thus do we age...

[So... what's with this colloration idea? My senior prom is ancient history and this year my daughter is a graduating senior (and my son, a freshman, will be escorting a junior to her prom at a different school)... I think a collaboration might be interesting... do you think an old timer could be involved?]

My memories of that dance are of a wonderful magical evening... and that's not the result of nostalgia, it was what I thought at the time... One of our stops before the dance was at a lawn party being held by the parents of one of my classmates (they owned the leading jewelery store in town), huge sweeping lawn, could almost have been a golf course itself, twenty or thirty teenage couples milling about, pastel gowns, white dinner jackets, in my mind I kept saying "wow" and "this is so beautiful" and "this is the way to live" and when, in college, I read Gatsby, I thought back to this moment.

p.s. I was class of '61 -- yeah, 40th reunion coming in 2001
