Emery airplane landing prompts alert

The Associated Press 03/01/00 2:16 PM Eastern

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Emergency vehicles scrambled to a runway at Dayton International Airport on Wednesday after the pilot of an arriving Emery Worldwide cargo plane reported a possible problem with a tire on the landing gear.

The DC-8, which was bound for Dayton from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., landed without incident.

The airport declared an alert and dispatched fire trucks to the runway after receiving the pilot's report.

Emery spokesman Rocco Sacci said the alert was a precaution "because the pilot was not sure of the status of the landing-gear tire."

"There was no problem," Sacci said.

On Feb. 16, all three crew members aboard an Emery DC-8 died when the plane crashed two minutes after its takeoff from Mather Airport into an auto yard in suburban Sacramento, Calif.

Investigators are looking into numerous factors, including if there was a shift in the cargo. The crew had reported a "center of gravity" problem shortly after takeoff for Dayton.

Emery, which is based in Redwood City, Calif., operates its main North America sorting hub in Dayton.

Very interesting. Thank you. Exactly why did you post this article? Is the implication that we should be worried about landing gear tires? Or is the implication that something else is going on and TPTB are covering it up?

Or do you thing that posting every article involving an airplane that comes over the wire services is useful? If so, why?
