It is slightly gold in color and a little larger than a quarter and has a picture of Sacagawea on the front. My husband got one and tried to spend it. The recipient refused to take it. I also asked a clerk in K-Mart if she would take it but she said she would have to ask the manager. My my, aren't we off to a good start. Well, I don't know about everyone else but I think they are kind of neat, especially with the year 2000 marked on them so I am going to save up as many as I can.

Maybe it was refused because they haven't been officially introduced yet. WalMart got permission to promote them, and gives them in change, but the official announcement/intorduction isn't until later on, I think around the end of March. Try it again then.

I got 3 silver dollars back from the post office Saturday after purchasing a book of stamps from a machine. I didn't check to see if they were the new ones, I just put the coins in with my other change in my purse and forgot about them. Last night I tried to give an 'honest' clerk one as a quarter, and she recognized my mistake right away. I promptly used them for my next purchase and hope I don't get any more. I don't want to have to 'examine' my coins to see if I have a quarter or a dollar.

Believe it or not I had something similar happen, but it was a long time ago, back in the 1950's.

Just for the heck of it, I went to the bank and got a few silver dollars. Back then, they were the real ones, real silver, real big, and they only "cost" a dollar.

No one would take them!

I couldn't spend them, and ended up taking them back to the bank to trade for "real" money. (which back then really WAS real, because they were Silver Certificates)

As for the cost of the new dollars -- the production cost is much less than that of paper dollars, because the coins last so much longer than the paper. Last estimate I read was that the average life of a U.S. paper dollar was fifteen days.

Unfortunately, we'll have to accept some degree of collateral damage to men's pants pockets in the form of increased wear. On the other hand, men's billfolds will be thinner.

The Canadians introduced a dollar coin quite a while back -- now they have a two-dollar coin too. They seem to be getting used to it.

In Australia we now have both a dollar coin and a two dollar coin. Have had them both for many years now. They have also phased out the one and two dollar notes. Much more economical as they last heaps longer.

And, yes they are not in circulation yet. The banks will NOT take them as they are NOT "tender" until "released". Walmart/SAms did this as a promotion, and the treasury figgered it would be an easy way to get things started....
