Following is an email message from our Y2K project manager. Names and locations have been deleted.

With much the same whimper as the New Year dawning, the world seemingly rolled over into our odd-once-every-400-years Leap Year. This is the last date that will be actively tracked by XXXXXXX's Y2K Programme.

So did we have any problems? Yes, just a couple .......

Our XXXXXX Station experienced some synchronisation problems at about a minute past midnight. This resulted in incorrect time-tagging and unreliable trend information being captured, however the plant was in a shut down state (XXXXXXXXX was holding the fort last night) so this did not represent a significant problem. Time synchronisation problems continued for the next few hours, until automatic resynchronisation pulled things back into line. It is quite interesting really. These "smart" components, all with their own idea of what time it is - effectively hustle and bustle (and occasionally have to be turned off/on) until they get their act together and agree what time it is! The important thing is, that even if XXXXXXXX had been running at the time, there would not have been a trip or equipment limitation - but there may have been a few operators showing just a bit of cold sweat! The problem seems to be related to a Leap Year/NZ Summer Time combination and Siemens are currently investigating.

The second problem was very disappointing to say the least!! Our nemesis, the Speaking Clock, struck again. You may recall that on 1/1/2000 the clock rolled over to 1/1/1999. Well, this time it just plain skipped a day - it rolled over to 1/3/2000. Given that this was a potentially weak-link, we did some checking early this morning and found the problem before it created a major headache for our Revenue Metering System.

To date this is the full story. Should anything interesting happen in the next week or so, before the Project is officially "boxed and archived" on 10 March 2000, I will let you know.

Regards

XXXXX XXXXX Y2K Project Manager
