Computer Glitch Silences OSU Teachers Faculty E-mail Down For More Than Three Days

CORVALLIS, Ore., Updated 12:01 p.m. PST February 26, 2000 -- The busy Oregon State University faculty received some quiet time this past week -- whether they wanted it or not.

A glitch in one of the computers that drives the university's Microsoft Outlook e-mail system cut off electronic messaging for nearly 1,800 faculty and staff members on Tuesday.

There also were some disruptions of the shared electronic calendar before service was restored Friday.

The problem was traced to a bad printed circuit board in a server computer.

About a quarter of the faculty and staff with campus e-mail accounts were affected by the problem, but no student accounts were disrupted.
