Goats worming and vaccines

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello again, I have more and more questions about worming and vaccines. I have a 2 year old doe, 1 year old doe, 3 week old kids. I need to worm them and find out what to do for the kids. I have read my Carla Emery book, it just doesn't seem to give me the anwsers that I need. We have a small animal vet who isn't interested in my goats. So I would have to travel for worming and vaccines unless I learn how to give on my own. I just got the goats first of the year, so I know they are all due for something. HELP!!!! You are all so great. Karole. Bernice or Gerbil sent me something I can't find it. eckkkk...

Hi Karole, We use ivomec for worming our goats. For the age of does you listed I'd say they are probably 150 pounds? You give the dosage based on weight. But first.... Are they pregnant or does the possibility exist? If they are you will then want to use safeguard. If not then I'd suggest the ivomec, we give a little more than the prescribed dosage on the bottle as thats what the goat breeders told us they do. It seems to work. We give for a 150 # doe 3cc's of ivomec. As for the kids, I just copied and pasted this information for you: This info is from my goat "expert" Jeannie.

I worm the doe the first week after freshening, just as soon as possible (usually the third day), with Ivomec. The milk from the doe that has been wormed should be ok, if it's mixed with other pasteurized milk. Usually the early kids are the least likely to have a parasite or cocci problems..panacur works well here, on the early kids at about 6 weeks old. Some herds can no longer use Panacur..it no longer works for them. I have never liked Vabzen..doesn't work well here. It depends upon the herd and the month the kid is born. Kids born from April forward, are most likely to pick up parasites and cocci problems regardless of how clean you may try to be...just a fact! You'll usually find that Ivomec has to be used on the late born kids, prior to 6 weeks. That too, depends on the weather..whether wet or dry, etc.

to get the wormers you can try your local farm supply or go to this website:http://www.goatsupplies.com Furney Register is the owner of the business and is very good to work with. If you have any more questions I'll be more than happy to help. Oh, on the ivomec, give it orally as it burns by injection.. I also usually give a trat after. The valbazen we use on our bucks only. You can on does but only those not pregnant or lactating. Hope this helps.

I also wanted to mention that your goats will need their boosters and a CD-T shot. Here is more information on kids I found in my files.

Many breeders use this and have produced very healthy goats. BIRTH: After kid is delivered...clean and dry..then navel and feet are iodined then given 5 grams of Probios or Reload orally, first 3cc of Imugen orally (give for three days-once a day), I GIVE A PRODUCT CALLED IMMUNO_G AND SWEAR BY IT! 2cc C&D antitoxin, and 1.5 cc Bo- Se. Week 1 to 4: Week 3 or four..wormed with Valbazen wormer 2cc/25lbs and started on a cocci treatment with either SMZ-Bactrim (1cc/10lbs twice a day for 7 days) or Di-Methox Injectable orally (1cc/40lbs put in milk twice a day for 7 days). Week four given 2cc CD & T toxoid and 1cc Bo-Se. Week 5-8: Week 5 wormed with Valbazen 2cc/25 lbs. Week 8 is given 2cc CD & T Toxoid Booster Week 9 to Breeding: Before breeding wormed with Valbazen 2cc/25lbs. and given Bo-Se 21/2c/100lbs. In December (using the breeding of Oct- November)..give CD & Tbooster and Bo-Se. Doe Kidding: When doe kids she is given 21/2cc Oxytocin to aid in cleaning, wormed with Valbazen 2cc/25lbs., Bo-Se 21/2cc/100 lbs. At second milking give 5-10 grams of Probios or Reload. Keep Calphosan on hand in case of calcium defiency (milk fever) 10cc/100lbs.

I PERSONALLY DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM TO THE LETTER BUT PRETTY MUCH FOLLOW IT. i HOPE i HAVE NOT CONFUSED YOU TOO BAD, IF I HAVE JUST LET ME KNOW AND I'LL TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOU. TAKE CARE.
