RALEIGH, N.C. (February 25, 2000 12:12 p.m. EST

http://www.nandotimes.com) - Nando Media lost its connection to the Internet for about two and half hours Friday morning because of trouble originating at the main service provider. Anyone trying to access the many Web sites hosted by Nando during that time was unable to.

Nando Media, the interactive media division of The McClatchy Company, hosts 11 McClatchy newspaper sites and several other Web sites, including the New York Daily News and Nando's flagship operations, the Nando Times and SportServer.

All the sites went dead to the outside world when the connections broke at about 9 a.m. EST.

Johnny Corbett, Nando Media's Technical Director, described the situation as "being cut off at the knees."

Nando Media has multiple Internet service providers, each of which experienced problems in getting Nando its feed on Friday. The most serious problem was an actual break in the line between the main service provider - the "backbone" of the operation, according to Corbett - and Nando.

The connection from a backup provider was restored at about 10:30 a.m., making all Nando sites accessible but slow to load. The backup provider is a smaller phone line than the main line, and traffic overload can cause significant site delays.

Full service was restored at approximately 11:20 a.m.
