Machine Requirements

What is the minimum KVA requirement for guaranteed spotweld welding .125 to .187 6061T6 material under ideal conditions. Our largest machine is a 250 KVA. This question was posed by a Military Contractor to our Engineering Dept.

KVA is not the question.

The machine needs to have fast follow-up, forge control, and post heat. The machine settings would indicate that a three phase low frequency or three phase direct current welder would be required.

A quick estimate is that the machine minimum requirements would be:

1. 4,500 lbs. weld; 10,000 lbs. forge minimum. 2. Diaphragm or fast follow-up spring ram. 3. 130,000 amps weld current. 4. The material requires pre-cleaning.

If your 250 KVA meets or exceeds the above estimates, you should be capable of making high quality mil. spec. welds.
