$4.50 in London UK (converted Litres/US Gallons and UK#/$)

Posted because I think it shows that the USA could actually stand much higher gas prices. Although of course, its our government rather than OPEC collecting the extra dosh.

-- Nigel - Devils Advocate (nra@maxwell.ph.kcl.ac.uk), February 25, 2000.

We might be able to stand it but we won't let it happen. In the US we would rather pay it to the oil companies provided they can show justification than to a government who we know wastes it. Our gas taxes are to be spent on the road system and its not. Its being borrowed to mask the beficit just like the social security money has been borrowed for years.

We also live much more scattered than most of Europe. I live 20 miles from where I work. A friend of mine lives 35 miles from work. It a reality here in the states that you can't always work near home.

I commented on the rollercoaster gas prices here in southwest lower Michigan before and we have had several more dips and spikes. It went from 1.46.9 on wednesday to 1.57.9 on thursday. The dip was a lot shallower this time. usualy we go up 10 cents and then slide back down over a couple of weeks only to pop up again overnight.

$1.32 is the lowest. In Southeast MO we have a really progressive fuel supplier. He boast 3 cents over his cost. Calls his station Basic Fuel. Accepts cash only and has every station in the region after him. They have actually decided to take him to court claiming he is unfairly selling his fuel below their break even point.

-- kevin (innxxs@yahoo.com), February 25, 2000.

Our cheapest just jumped from 1.32 to 1.39 and at that particular station the waiting long can force you to another station. Otherwise its 1.47 to 1.51 for 85 unleaded here in Glenwood Springs, CO

The prices just jacked up two days ago.

Nigel,

You Brits are getting REAMED! All Europeans for that matter. How is it that with such short supply lines to the Mid-East, you're paying 3x what we are, on average? It could practically be piped in.

Instead of saying the US could stand to pay more, how about you guys demand that YOUR prices be reviewed and decreased?

$1.429 for 87 octane in NE Ohio.
