GLOBE.NET SUFFERS 14-HOUR NETWORK OUTAGE

By TOM PULLAR-STRECKER

WELLINGTON-based Internet access provider Globe.Net suffered a protracted network outage last weekend caused by a faulty card and configuration problems during a Christchurch equipment upgrade.

The outage is understood to have affected some Globe.Net subscribers for up to 14 hours.

Managing director Lou Parun says Globe.Net is trading well. He says the company increased its subscriber base by a third in the past two months, as it rolled out its service nationwide.

Globe.Net was rescued by New Zealand investors after going into voluntary liquidation in 1996. Mr Parun says Globe.Net remains "one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest" Internet access provider in New Zealand, with a flat monthly rate of $29.95 (including gst) for unlimited access, or $9.50 for 20 hours per calendar month with a $9.50 charge for additional hours online.
