US West phone customers report outages

CLOVIS, N.M. - This time, gophers are only indirectly to blame for more telephone problems in Clovis, US West spokeswoman Valerie Santillanes said.

Clovis residents and businesses were unable to complete long-distance phone calls for at least two hours Tuesday, with some customers reporting even longer outages, Santillanes said.

About two weeks ago, US West telephone customers experienced similar problems in eastern New Mexico after gophers chewed on a cable and disrupted service, Santillanes said.

After that incident, the cable had been dug up and repaired. But US West had not reburied the line yet, and on Tuesday, someone vandalized it, causing another disruption in telephone service, Santillanes said.

Most customers affected by the outage lost long-distance service between 3-5 p.m. MST, but others reported longer problems that continued until late Tuesday.
