Glitch at Sabre delays flights

By D.R. STEWART World Staff Writer 2/23/00

Sabre Holdings Corp. said Tuesday that a computer malfunction at its operations center in Tulsa caused flight delays for airline customers, including American Airlines and US Airways.

The disruption in Sabre's data center at Tulsa International Airport prevented airline reservation workers and some travel agents from accessing the system. Sabre is the world's largest travel- reservation company.

The trouble began at abut 9:00 a.m. local time and was resolved two hours later, Sabre said.

American Airlines experienced minor delays, said a spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier.

"Our operations people reported delays at Chicago and Los Angeles, where our presence is significant, but in most cases the delays were so short that passengers wouldn't have noticed," said American spokesman John Hotard.

US Airways, based in Arlington, Va., had flight delays and limited cancellations as a result of the malfunction, which affected computer systems used to check in passengers and reserve seats, a spokesman said.

Sabre spokesman Theda Page Whitehead said company technicians were performing diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the problem.

Sabre employs 2,200 people in Tulsa.

AMR Corp., the parent company of American and the owner of 83 percent of Fort Worth- based Sabre, unveiled plans in December to spin off its stake in a transaction valued at more than $6 billion.

Sabre shares, which fell 49 cents Tuesday to close at $37.88, have risen 5.4 percent in the past 12 months.
