Beckett applies Y2K lessons to cyber security

The UK should use the lessons learnt from solving the year 2000 to tackle the threat from hackers, Margaret Beckett, leader of the House of Commons, said yesterday.

In a speech to business leaders, Beckett said that it was vital for the UK to be recognised as the safest place for electronic commerce.

Protecting the infrastructure and building up trust in e-commerce is the new challenge for the millennium, she said.

One of the most important lessons from the year 2000 problem was to treat it as an issue for management, not just the IT department. Responsibility has to be taken at board level, she said.

She urged businesses and government to collaborate to address security threats to the UK's communications, power, transport and water infrastructure.
