18c PETROL PRICE HIKE IN MARCH February 23, 2000

Motorists will be hit by an 18c a litre petrol increase in March due to a five cent increase in the fuel levy announced by Trevor Manuel on Wednesday which comes on top of a 13c a litre hike due to the higher price of crude oil.

Manuel said on Wednesday that the levy on leaded and unleaded petrol will increase next month by 5c a litre and the levy on diesel fuel will go up by 3c a litre.

In more bad news, senior economist at Econometrix, Tony Twine, said there could be a further product-related price increase in early April.

If the $30 a barrel price for crude oil "hangs around" we could have a further 15 to 21c per litre hike in April.

Despite this, Twine said the increase announced by Manuel was "mercifully lenient".

The 5c a litre levy increase means that for a car with a 50 litre tank it will cost R2,50 more to fill up.
