OT: What should I name my web page?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

It just struck me that you folks might be a good test case for my web page idea.

My dominion name is already in use, so I can, for instance call it: Disney-land.com, or Dinseyland.net, or DisneylandWebPage.com. (all phoney names, but you get the idea.)

As this will be a commercial site dedicated to a number of endevors all supporting a wildlife sanctuary, I want an easy-to-remember handle.

I kinda like the ...WebPage ending, allowing me to keep the .com extention,

But? what do you think,? Is the .com important, like 800 numbers are easier to remember than 888, 877 and the rest, or is the proper name important and the extention of little importance?

Play... to see whats still available.

Network Solutions... the dot com people... WhoIs database...

Dot com for commercial, dot org for non-profit is still a good way to go.

Your're supporting a wildlife sanctuary and George Bush at the same time? ROTFLMAO

-- (@ .), February 22, 2000.

a,

You know, I thought it was a simple question.

As far as your "response" to my query, I am not supporting GW. I DID pose the question 3 days ago of why there was so little discussion regarding Gore's integrity VS McCain & Bush. Maybe that's what made you laugh.

My wife and I already own the wildlife sanctuary, but fencing, building ponds and managing the forests take money. We live in a lodge in the middle of it, that will soon be a B&B. The supporting corporations are for things like organic goat cheeses, fruits, herbs, honey from our bee hives and hand-crafted furniture. If you're interested, I'll put you on the mailing list.

So, what do think regarding the name?

When I search, I'll stick with a key name, but try the .com .net .org before trying another domain name, or abandon the look. I don't know if others plod along likewise, but for me the name is more important than the dot. How about wolfcub.com ?

EC -

You need to give us a better idea of what you have in mind. ".com" suggests a commercial hunting preserve. If your emphasis is really on "sanctuary", then ".org" or ".net" would get your purpose across better (assuming it is available for whatever commercial use you intended). Can you cross post on the DomainName.com site?

Not enamoured with "WebPage", but I don't see enough of what you are working with.

Good luck! Would certainly be interested in hearing more about your endeavor and what the sanctuary would be like.

ElCoyote,
The ".xyz" is very important.
Like Diane said, ".com" is the commercial extension.
".gov" is Government
".net" is Internet Service Provider type companies
".org" is Non-profit organizations

Be careful if your Domain name you want is already "in use". The other company will not be pleased if you "mimic" their name with a minor change(this is how they will see it). If they are truly in the same "line of business" then you could get your name pulled at a later date when they protest to Network Solutions.

Use the ".com", you will get "lost in the shuffle" if you try anything else.
Please put me on your list, I would like to hear more about your project.

Are you looking for a name?

How about www.naturessanctuary.com. Can think of others if this is what you want.

Thanks all! I kinda like the .org suggestion since nobody was wowed by my ...webpage idea. I know it's available too.

We already have the name of the sanctuary, the publishing company (for nature books), and the B & B. All begin with the same words (ie: Wasteland Lodge, Wasteland Dairy...)

Their is a wine seller on the other side of the country that has "XYZ.com" tied up. They don't sell under that name & we've been in business for 6 years now.

With a stall at the Seattle Pike Place Market selling our herbs, honey & fruits, we really don't want to change the name just for the web page.

With these enterprises supporting us and the (for profit) wildlife sanctuary, any restrictions on .org that you know of?

Thanks

Don't use "God's Wilderness" or any variation on that name, as it is taken.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr (pic), near Monterey, California

.org is supposed to relate to non-profit organizations. However, as far as I recall, there are no hoops to jump through to prove this official status. If you are, in fact, a non-profit, you would probably wish to make this clear to your patrons, so a .org designation would be preferred.

In the case of my own domain, lacarte, I got the .org designation with the intention of eventually getting the 501(c)3 non-profit status for some of the lacarte activities. I haven't bothered to actually file for the designation, yet, since there have been no financial transactions so far. I did also nail down the lacarte.com domain, with the idea that people who only knew the name lacarte, and allowed their browser to finish the URL, would be automatically rerouted to the .org pages.

That said... this really doesn't seem to me to be the right forum on which to ask such a question, even if you mark it as OT.
