Some Simple Questions, and a comment

We're well beyond month end January. What do you know about month end accounting problems? I've seen several comments about this board being a source of primary information about the 'oil crisis', airplane crashes, chemical spills, pc problems, and 'embeddeds' with much wringing of hands about the media comspiracy. Try the websites for the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Times, Las Angeles Times, etc. Forget your local Gannet rags which publish the same story on two different pages and are about as reliable as the Star or National Enquirer. I hope you're not reading those except at the checkout counter. Given the media feeding on our current president's problems in gross detail , you'd have to be fairly dense to think that there's some kind of media conspiracy to cover up one of the minor incidents of our time, except for a lot of editorializing about the cost, as if the commentators knew anything about the problem or the solutions.

The major newspapers you mention are all liberal mouthpieces for the current administration. Not exactly unbiased, in my opinion.

The supermarket tabloids you mentioned are not worthy of wasting your eyesight on.

Everybody is afraid of rocking the boat. Nope, can't discuss the real issues and ramifications because some politician will suffer damage. Its not the media per se...it is TPTB and the power they exercise over AND through the media.

Exactly my point. If the they were the mouthpiece of the current administration, you'd give me to believe that they were controlled during the impeachment hearings or Whitewater scandal? You haven't been reading your newspapers, whatever they are. I occasionally look at the 'alternate' newspaper here in D.C., the Washington Times, which seems to have a much more narrowly focused view, i.e. controlled, of the news than any of the papers mentioned.

NYTimes liberal? Not really.

Irving,

"The major newspapers you mention are all liberal mouthpieces for the current administration."

Not true. They are mouthpieces for whoever buys them with the most money. A few weeks ago, conservatives were whining that the press was favoring McCain. What about now? Looks like Dubya Shrub coughed up a serious chunk of change to get them on his side.

Mimi,

The reason we didn't and aren't hearing much about Y2K problems has little to do with media. The corporate establishment had a handle on this well before they even started fixing Y2K. Most anyone who worked on their systems was required to sign contracts swearing that no information would be leaked. Preserving the perceived value of their stocks was the highest priority on their list, and so far they've pulled it off. The amount of problems we've heard about through the media probably amounts to less than 5% of what actually happened, and most of those were still labeled "not Y2K related."

MY company, which will obviously remain nameless except for the Warhammer monicker, ran into a little problem transiting the fiscal year barrier. they THOUGHT they had it under control, until yesterday, when I asked for my 1099.

They said "How much do you want it to say. We lost all our financial data for the year through October."

In reference to no Y2K problems being reported, here's why I can't talk....

1. Personal liability statement for Y2K remediation work required by management. The company's liability for major failures would be limited to the conditions specified in existing contracts.

2. Numerous "offical" announcements from management to disclose NO Y2K status information to ANYONE outside the company.

2.1. The seriousness of consequences for failing to comply with #2.

3. Too busy and tires for 18 months to talk anyway.
