Old Armor problem.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

Here's an interesting problem I'm having with a 1973 vintage Armor elevator.

It's a two speed AC unit with all original equipment and runs 7 floors.

Two high speed motor overloads blow ONLY WHEN CAR IS AT BOTTOM LANDING AND STARTING UP. It's never done it anywhere else in the hatch.

I've never seen it do it and it can run a day or sometimes weeks without doing it. From all accounts from the riders the PI's and button lights go out just after the doors close. It seems like the overloads blow instantly. We've tested them on a test bench and it takes 10 to 12 seconds at 200 amps before they open and if I simulate a lost leg on the control board it smokes the heck out of the motor and I've never seen that either. (I've arrived within 15 min. of call and found cold motor no smell) They are Square D type overloads where the heater and melting material are one piece.

Things I've done: Motor meged twice by our motor people. Nothing found wrong. New overloads installed All motor wiring and relays checked for shorts and grounds. All brake wires and contacts checked for hanging brake magnet core. Even changed brake coils from other car. (Duplex installation) I think I've checked everything a hundred times but no luck.

Just thought I'd throw this out there and hope for the best. If anybody has any ideas or other questions I'd love to discuss it.

Thanks for reading this. Fred

Armor

Fred (fine name) Not being there I can only second guess. If you have access to a heat gun check all electric connections from the main line to the motor, including the controller. Clamp on ampmeter. Does the car draw more currentleaving that floor(tight rails)Does it use a reistance grid or reactor to smooth starting and stopping transitions. Does it do it with some load or empty car (counterweighting). I ran across a job once that the installing contractor had put painted shaped wood in the cwt frame. Good hunting Fred
