Hydraulic problem forces airliner to return to S.F. Airport

Mercury News Staff Report

A jetliner carrying 179 passengers and crew members made an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday afternoon shortly after it took off for Baltimore and then experienced a mechanical problem.

United Airlines Flight 222 reported a problem with its hydraulic system shortly after it departed at 2:50 p.m., according to airport duty manager Dennis Neves.

He said the plane circled over the ocean to burn off fuel before making a safe landing at 5:15 p.m.

The nose-wheel steering mechanism on the Boeing 757 was inoperative, so the plane was towed off the runway, Neves said.

The 174 passengers were booking alternate flights Saturday night.
