Nuclear Shutdown?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My local reactor, Monticello-Minnesota, shut down for refueling 1/5/00. It began the process 11/15/99 and reduced its output to 82% 1/5, that's a drop of about .5%/day.

I just looked at Limerick1 (I couldn't find the address at NRC). It began shutdown 1/19 and is still, 2/18, at 97%. Are they having problems?

Has anyone been tracking refueling shutdowns at other plants

Thank you for the post John. If I find anything, I will post it for you.

See http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/reactors.html

"Daily Events Report" shows current problems ("event") at nuclear plants.

"Plant Status Report" shows current operating status of every nuclear plant.

Note it is normal for plants to "coast down" to cold shutdown for refueling. It's supposed to be safer and less stressful on the equipment than a reactor trip (where everything immediately is shutdown). Similarly, the "coast up" to full power.

"Coast down" is the point. They are not coasting down., they are stuck at 97-97%. After 1 month they should be down below 90%.

John, I will reaseach, IF I find anything will report back. I live really close myself. About 35 miles to the southeast as the crow flies. I remember using their towers as a landmark when I use to fly VFR. Now I fly IFR. Humor-- Take Hwy 10 northwest If you get to Clear Lake proceed south. Take Care.
