About 2,000 gallons of kerosene sold at an Orefield Sunoco gas station were recalled Thursday after they were discovered to be tainted with gasoline.

The kerosene, which was sold between Jan. 26 and Feb. 9 at the Park-Mart convenience store, was found to contain gasoline when a South Whitehall resident called township officials to report the top of his kerosene heater exploded when he lit it last week. The man suffered no injuries.

The remaining kerosene was examined and found to contain 8 percent gasoline, said Herb Miller, South Whitehall's fire inspector.

''The big thing is the safety issue,'' Miller said. ''The gasoline mixed in makes it flammable and dangerous.''

Officials at Pipeline Petroleum, which owns the station and supplied the kerosene, said they are unsure how the fuel became tainted.

Any of a number of scenarios could have occurred, said Pipeline Petroleum Vice President Tari Ebert. The kerosene could have been tainted when it arrived at the Sunoco terminal where Pipeline Petroleum picked it up. It could have been tainted when the tank was refilled. If the tank was not properly cleaned, it could leave trace amounts.

''It was a very strange incident, and we're still investigating it,'' Ebert said.

Store manager Dot O'Neill estimated the kerosene was purchased by about 500 people, most of whom use it for heaters. She and her staff spent much of Thursday calling customers whose names were culled from credit card receipts to inform them about the situation.

O'Neill said although only one person had returned the kerosene to her store by late afternoon Thursday, she received calls from several customers who had used their fuel and not had any problems.

Any customers who purchased kerosene at the store, at Route 309 and Lime Kiln Road, should return it for a full refund. Those with questions can call the store at 610-398-8553.
