Mr. Hawk.......Baseball is boring?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

To the distinguished Mr. Hawk:

While I usually find your postings well thought out and stirring, I must take exception to your comments describing baseball as boring. Good heavens...perhaps you don't understand the game. Am going to bed right now, but am willing to explain the infield fly rule to you if you find it helpful. Am available to respond to any and all baseball related postings...tomorrow late evening. PLAY BALL!!!!

Baseball is as boring as golf and all other sports....except, maybe tennis?

Heck, I don't like them ether!

At least at a baseball game you can get a hot dog and yell at the players. If golf would (1) put up a few bleachers, (2) allow throwing paper cups at the contestants, (3) allow the occasional "wave" in the stands, (4) have cheerleaders, and (5) institute my new "full-contact" rules, golf might not be as boring as watching grass grow.

BTW, tennis is boring, too, unless the players are following the "new" rules requiring players to wear 10-pound weights on each foot and do the "moonwalk" at least once per set.

If King of Spain were here, I'm sure he'd say that mudwrestling is the ULTIMATE sport, LOL.

"I must take exception to your comments describing baseball as boring."

You really shouldn't, it was just my opinion.

In my opinion, baseball players are among the least physically fit of athletes, because the game moves too slow. I don't enjoy waiting around for the pitcher to scratch his ass and spit tobacco between every pitch. IMO, the best thing about baseball is the hotdogs and beer.

Now, hockey - that's a good game!

I don't like sports either. About the only thing I stop to watch when flipping channels is boxing. I can appreciate a great interception, or a home run when the bases are loaded, but I just don't care one bit about who's playing for what team and who wins which game.

I'll never understand folks who live their lives for sports and feel that *they* are somehow winners when the team they are rooting for wins.

Even though I think it is silly, I can understand why people can root for a real home team. Like high school sports. But, the major leagues- complete strangers, millionaires with no loyalty but to the dollar. Never understood those poor people who think they personally know movie stars either. Ah, there are many forms of escapism, though.

This is bordering on blasphemy!!! :-)

What could be better than the Boys of Summer and a cold beer on a Saturday afternoon????

God I love baseball.........'specially the Little Leaguers!

Anyway who says they do not like baseball obviously did not see the Braves-Mets championship series last year.

Even my wife, who is an avid sports-hater was gripped by the end of game 5.

There is no greater game of strategy played on a field.

BTW, Hawk, of course you are entitled to your opinion, but to say that ANY professional sport has a preponderance of athletes that are not physically fit is preposterous.

You will not last long on a baseball field if you are out of shape. It may look like they are doing nothing, but believe me it takes tremendous physical effort to do what they do.

I guess you so not think actos have to be in great shape either, wether they are doing action films or straight dramas.

I just had a bit role in an off-off broadway production and it still took a lot out of me. I now appreciate how fit one must be for a starring role.

Baseball IS dull, but I want to go to one of the Dodgers games here in Vero. The season start is 3/3. Saw polo this last weekend--that's dull, too.

Or on a different level: the final game of the Yankees-Padres Series two years back, when 70,000+ Padres fans gave their team (swept by the !@#$%^ Yankees 4 games to 0!) a 20 minute standing ovation in appreciation for a wonderful year. Even some of the Yanks players came back out to the field to stand and marvel. One of my favorite sports memories.

Was only a casual baseball fan until I read George F. Will's Men At Work: The Craft of Baseball. Gained much appreciation for the challenge and beauty of the game. After that, I was hooked!

Baseball usually IS boring to watch. The thought of being surrounded by drunk men with mustard stains down the front of their shirts...UGH, I shudder at the thought.

BASKETBALL is much more exciting (especially when my kid is shakin the court!). Boxing is fun to watch, UNLESS Tyson (the idiot) is fighting. Haven't been to a hockey game.

Now golf...golf is NOT a sport. Golf is old men in ugly pants...walking. That's golf.
