Small planes collide near Milan

February 17, 2000 MILAN, O. - Two small planes collided in the air west of here Tuesday, but no one was hurt, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Troopers in Sandusky said Duane Shrimplin, 64, of Mansfield was flying his Cessna 172 south at 3,300 feet on approach to the Norwalk airport when it was hit about 3:30 p.m. by a Piper Dakota traveling northeast.

The Piper, operated by Walt Henricks, 76, of Elyria, was passing beneath the Cessna when its tail hit the passenger door of Mr. Shrimplin's plane. The Cessna's door was sheared off, and its front strut and passenger seat were damaged. The Piper's tail, fuselage, and rudder assembly were damaged.

Mr. Shrimplin landed his plane at the Galion Airport, and Mr. Henricks landed at the Lorain County Regional Airport. Mr. Shrimplin was transporting one passenger, Jerry Kenison, also of Mansfield.
