Getting a new rider started!?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : New England Motocross Racing : One Thread

This one is for all the dads and moms out there. My 6 year old spent some time learning to ride last summer and he really enjoys it. How can I keep him interested, and at the same time develop his skills? What's our next step? I'm thinking about taking my chances by putting him in a beginners class at the closest park (Jolly Roger in NH). Can anyone out there tell me what has worked for them?

My thoughts only... If it is something he really wants to do , you won't need to keep him interested, he will keep you busy. Lots of practice and riding with others, both experienced and of all ages.Getting aquainted with others riding, getting lots of support, all helps build them.As for the racing...what does he think ? Support how he feels, if he is not ready let him know thats fine that there will be many races. Take him to the races let him talk to the others in the 50cc class, bring him out to the starting line. Most places run classes by age.Maybe get a riding partner of his age to make him more comfortable, to let him know he is not alone. They all start somewhere.Motocross is a wonderful sport! I wish him the best of luck, the 50cc riders are our future. My son, 7 has been racing for 4 yrs. we have come along way, and still have a long way to go..Don't give up, he will always make you proud !
