National Hotel Chain Admits to Y2K Problems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I was making a hotel reservation at a nationally known hotel chain over the internet today at approximately 10:00AM - It was for the night of 29 February 2000 - The computer did not recognize the date and, as such, kicked back to the next recognizable date, which was 28 February 2000 - After repeated attempts failed, I E-Mailed the hotel in question and explained the problem - They said they would fix it and get back to me - After about twenty minutes, they E-Mailed me saying the problem was fixed and suggested that I try again - After a couple of more attempts yielded the same result, I E-Mailed them and stated that the problem still exists - After another twenty or so minutes, I received another E-Mail expressing their apologies and that this was "...another Y2K problem we have to fix." Has anyone else experienced similar problems with "29 February 2000?"

My problem was with a well known bank, seeking help over internet. Could not access certain information so I e-mailed them. The bank e-mailed me back, said they were having computer problems and to phone them or write them. This has just happened, nothing to do with 2/29/00.

If the 29th isn't recognized by a particular program, then presumably beginning March 1, 2000, the date designation and the day (MONDAY, etc.) will diverge by one, and remain innaccurate thereafter until the problem is fixed. Aside from complete disorder in hotel reservations, what other problems might be likely to occur as a consequence of a divergence like that?

Mr. Hunter, how about interest calculation that is compounded daily?

Any reason not to post the names and specifics?

Corporation names, clerk names, telephone numbers, etc.

I know we don't believe in journalists here on this board, but this is what they do, and if it doesn't check out, it's called rumor, or a clerk thinking he understands a problem he doesn't, or passing the buck, or...

Squirrel Hunter,

Things like building environmental controls and security systems could get confused, thinking it's a weekend, when it isn't. And since Mara mentioned banks, how about vault timers? And we have the old traffic light controls... <:)=

Couldn't agree more, ImSo.

Prior to 1/1/2000, we hoped to hear from whistle blowers, but it was thought that non-disclosure agreements or threat of being fired kept tham back.

Now this is an instance that none of that would apply to. If Bob would giv us specifics (Name of chain, desired location to stay at, e- mail address, etc), I could believe this. As it is, I can't.

I travel extensively, and have never heard of a hotel chain telling me to e-mail them. It doesn't add up.

I am certainly no Polly, but I definitely believe we should be reporting all the info, as I did in this recent incident:

Update to Major Memphis Outage

C'mon people! If we want this board to be a forum for major grass roots reporting, we have to include facts!

Until we do that, this is just rumor!!!!!

The name of the hotel chain is Comfort Inn - The one I was trying to secure a reservation is located in downtown Tampa, Florida - As, I write, I do not have the E-Mail address with me, as I am not at my office - Thank you for your thoughtful criticism - It is definitely more palatable than the invectives I have read elsewhere at this site

Thanks, Bob, for providing the info.

I just called the Comfort Inn Western 9331 Adamo Drive

(813) 621-5555

I told the woman who answered the phone that I'd like to make a reservation. She said "For what date"

I told her "Tuesday, February 29"

I was put on hold for about 2 seconds, and she came back and said "can you hold for a minute?"

I asked if reservations was busy, and she said:

"No, one of my computers is down. Can I call you back?"

"How long has it been down?"

"I have no idea, sir."

"A couple of minutes? Since you came in this morning? Was it down yesterday?"

"Just now, I have to call support"

"Do you have a national rezervations number I can call?"

"Yes, the number is 877-287-6026"

So I called the noumber, and it took be right back directly into the hotel.

Same thing, but I found that the hotel is now Best Western. The woman doesn't know the national reservation number.

There definitely seems to ba a problem here, nut not a national problem, as I see it right now. Rather a local problem.

Was this the location you were calling, Bob?
