MIAMI - South Florida Water Management District officials say they will inspect sensors attached to flood control gates on Monday after three manatees were recently crushed when the gates closed upon them.

Manatees, which are an endangered species, are supposed to be safe near some of the 7-ton gates because the devices have sensors that keep them from closing when something blocks their path, much like an automatic garage door.

But one gate on the Tamiami Canal near Miami International Airport crushed two manatees in separate incidents in December. Officials suspect this gate's problems were caused by adjustments made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after it was erroneously tripped several times.

Another manatee was found dead in the Little River earlier this month near a different gate. The 820-pound female had a crushed skull and gate marks across her torso.

The sensors, which are on 10 gates and planned for 40 others, are supposed to activate when 14-pounds of pressure bears down on them. Costing $80,000 per gate, the sensors are part of a $5.7 million manatee protection program.

During the last 25 years, 160 manatees have been killed by flood gates and canal locks in Florida, including 15 last year, officials said. ) 2000 News-Journal Corp. . news-journalonline.com
