How to care for a wood burning stove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a wood burning stove. It is black so I am assuming it is cast iron. How do I care for it on the outside? I do cook on the surface so sometimes foods get spilled on it.

Plain old stove polish should work fine. You should be able to find it in any good hardware store, especially a long established one. Some sort of gloves are a good idea, since you will wind up as black as the stove if it gets on you. It is considered poor form to wear any but old clothes. Good Luck!

Hey Kathy. Use 'stove black', and as in the previous answer-old clothes! Wipe up daily spills with a very thick, throw away rag.
