Alaska: Fishing Vessel American Star catches fire and runs aground, crew safe

Near Cape Lazaref on the southeast side of Unimak Island, the fishing vessel American Star caught fire on February 11th. The crew was evacuated from the vessel by the Coast Guard. The vessel then ran aground over the weekend on a sand beach. It is carrying 12,000 gallons of diesel, 200 gallons of hydraulic oil and 100 gallons of lube oil. Overflights have not found signs of leaking fuel. It also appears to be full of water. A salvage vessel is enroute from Adak and is scheduled to arrive on scene Wednesday, February 16th. Weather conditions will determine how long salvage operations will take. Further information is available from Harry Young, DEC at 269-7542

Hey Fartwinkle, given your post, I doubt if you learned how to read very well, but most "small fishing boats" don't carry 12,000 gallons of fuel.....
