Pipeline explosion kills five in Southern Nigeria

Lagos - An explosion from a damaged oil pipeline has killed five people in a southern Nigerian town, a press report said on Sunday.

The victims were killed in Amukpe near Sapele in the oil-rich Niger

Delta region on Thursday while scavenging for fuel from the pipeline owned by the state-run Petroleum Pipeline Marketing Company (PPMC), the newspaper Vanguard reported.

It said that unknown to the scavengers, the pipeline had been damaged by some vandals before the incident.

The paper said the area had been cordoned off by security agents to prevent a spill to surrounding towns.

Oil explosions are frequent in the Niger Delta region which produces more than 90 percent of Nigeria's two million barrels of crude oil per day.

In 1998, more than 700 people were killed in Jesse, near Warri following an explosion from a burst pipeline. The victims were scavenging for fuel when they were killed. - Sapa-AFP
