May I suggest to have a dictionary in this site ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

For the readability of some texts by non-inititated people, I suggest to have a kind of dictionary where recurrent terms such as "polly", "doomer", or acronysms such as "ROTFLMAO", "TEOTWAWKI" would be explained in a couple of words. Thank you in anticipation for your support.

Great idea. When we get one, you can look up "acronysms."

Fat chance -- I have requested several times, for almost a year, if not longer, a FAQ page and link to it at the TOP of the main page.

Patients, just have patients...some of us can't mispell as fast as others.

BTW (By the way) -

OZ = Australia

NZ = New Zealand

Canadianainain = Indian word meaning "land of frozen lakes and no summers with many rectangular ice ponds and much playing of ice hickey."

I've gotten the feeling that:

OT = Oil Topic HT = Hacker Topic

various other topics, apparently: Water, Mystery, Spill, ...

One that got me for awhile was TPTB - "the powers that be"

Others: GI = "gets it" (about Y2K...i.e., a prepper or doomer) DGI = "doesn't get it" (i.e., a "polly") Polly = Pollyanna (i.e., optimist - Y2K will be a BITR) BITR = "bump in the road" (i.e., minor inconvenience) Doomer = self explanatory

Hey, someone needs to compile all of this!!!

Sheeple = the unthinking masses who DGI

Troll = a prankster who posts messages looking for reactions from neophytes; one who posts messages for the primary purpose of stiring up trouble or meaningless discussion; a polly (on this board).

OT = One (or another) Topic.....

Or,

OT = "off topic" (i.e., not about Y2K)

TSHTF = "the s*** hits the fan"

Keep 'em coming!

Try this thread: Deciphering the jargon: troll, OT, TEOTWAWKI, etc.

Other threads in this vein may be found under the category Y2K for Newcomers, found by scrolling nearly to the bottom of the TB2000 main page.

IMHO = In my humble opinion.

IMNSHO = In my not so humble opinion. (I try to be honest, if I can't be humble...)

PTB = Powers that be...

Don't forget "R.G.I.", a "Really Gets It". This IMO would most appropriately be used to refer to a G.I. who thinks Y2K will eventually hit us with at least a 7.0 on the 1 - 10 intensity scale. Think of Paul Milne, Infomagic, Gary North, etc. for some examples.
