Fishing crisis as oil slick hits Angola February 13 2000 at 02:51PM

Luanda - A slick of crude oil has washed up on the coast of Cabinda, northern Angola, over the past few days, government sources said on Saturday.

Patches of oil could be seen on the beaches, but so far the origin of the slick was unknown, the fisheries and environment ministry said in a statement.

A commission of experts from the US oil giant Chevron were in the area attempting to limit the pollution, the same source said.

Cabinda, Angola's oil producing region, is about 500km north of the capital Luanda.

Fishermen from villages in the area have stopped fishing, and hundreds of dead fish were floating on the waves, a local fishermens' association said.

The fisheries and environment ministry said it was in contact with authorities in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo with a view to enlisting the help of experts there to establish the origin of the slick.

Chevron had to mount a major operation in Cabinda December 28 following a leak of crude from one of its sites in the region. - Sapa-AFP
