Fire forces evacuation of Dorval airport

MONTREAL (CP) - A fire prompted officials to evacuate Montreal's Dorval airport while most flights were diverted to neighbouring Mirabel on Saturday afternoon.

No injuries were reported during the blaze, which began in a second-floor office at Dorval, the city's main airport. The fire was extinguished at 1:30 p.m., about an hour after it was reported.

About 1,000 commuters were affected as departures and arrivals were rerouted to Mirabel airport, 57 kilometres north of Montreal.

Airport spokeswoman Jacqueline Richard said later in the afternoon that the cause and size of the fire had not been determined.

Passengers in planes that arrived a the airport just before the fire broke out were forced wait in the planes while alternative arrangements were worked out.

Travellers slated to leave Montreal on Saturday afternoon - and anyone meeting commuters whose flights were scheduled to arrive at the airport - were asked to contact their airlines for details about changes to flight schedules.
