Station Home Page & More Local Information Flights canceled due to inspections SEATTLE, February 11 Alaska Airlines canceled about a dozen flights Friday because of the stabilizer inspections ordered by the FAA.

Northwest Aviation Connection SPECIAL COVERAGE: Crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 KING 5: Boeing recommends tail inspections

AIRLINE SPOKESMAN Jack Evans in Seattle says the order duplicates part of the inspections the airline conducted on its own this week. But its doing them again anyway along with testing of the jackscrew that controls the tail stabilizer. Two planes, one in Seattle and one in Portland, are grounded while the NTSB looks at jackscrews that showed metal shavings. The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the emergency inspections Thursday on all MD-80, MD-90, DC-9, and Boeing 717 jets. The order affects approximately 1,100 planes in the United States. The inspections were recommended after a damaged piece of tail wing was recovered from an Alaska Airlines jet that crashed into the Pacific Ocean last week, killing all 88 people aboard. Progress report

Here is a look at how those inspections were going for major carriers: ALASKA: Inspected 31 of 34 MD-80s in fleet. Two were grounded after fibers were found around jackscrews. Three remain to be inspected, airline President Bill Ayer said. AMERICAN: Expects to complete inspections of its 284 MD-80s and MD-90s within a week. The airline would not say whether any problems had been detected. CONTINENTAL: Expects to complete inspections on its 69 MD-80s this weekend. Nothing noteworthys been seen in the inspections, spokesman David Messing said. DELTA: Has inspected 115 of its 120 MD-88s and 16 MD-90s and found no problems, spokesman John Kennedy said. The checks were to be finished Friday. NORTHWEST: Has no MD-80s in its fleet of 416 aircraft. Does have 172 DC-9s and had found no problems with them by Thursday afternoon, said spokesman Dennis Mollura. The company also was checking the maintenance histories of all its aircraft and had found no past problems with horizontal stabilizers. TWA: Was scheduled to begin inspecting its fleet of 103 MD-80s and 29 DC-9s Thursday night and did not have an immediate timetable on when the checks would be completed. UNITED: Unaffected by the inspection recommendations and orders, spokesman Joe Hopkins said. It flies no MD-80s, MD-90s, DC-9s or 717s. )2000 Associated Press. All rights reserved. . . ."Investigators are also puzzling over the flight data recorder information on rudder movements, sources said. Just as the plane began its dive, the elevator data "went haywire," a source said, although much work remains to determine if there is any significance to the data. Sources said the elevator control system was jammed into the stabilizer."

Thanks, Dee...how do you post a link like that? I know how to send a link via email, but how do you send a link on a bulletin board? Thanks, RAT

In your browser go to "VIEW" at top menu - click on Page Source. Then you can view the code that went into making the page. Find the area where the link was made and that is the code you have to use. There is html before and after the URL and then the name of the link or the word link and then code after.

Yes, I warned them way back on Feb. 2 that all MD80 series and similar aircraft should be grounded and thoroughly inspected. They have now gorunded about 1,100 aircraft, 1/5 of the entire U.S. fleet. It is a good thing they finally listened to me, but more people will be killed unless they replace the embedded chips.

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), February 11, 2000.

What are the part numbers of the embedded chips that should be replaced?

Why should they be replaced?

What is the replacement part number?

-- Mikey2k (mikey2k@he.wont.eat.it), February 11, 2000.

Oh, it's Mickey Mouse again, worried about his part numbers. LOL!!

Yeah right Mickey, just let me call my good buddy Jacques Cousteau and I'll have those for ya in a jiffy.

Oh, that's right, he's dead. Sorry, guess I can't get them Mickey!

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), February 11, 2000.

The phlegm-hawker finally admits that he doesn't have the part numbers of the non-compliant chips.

Proof positive that he has nothing to back up his claims of non-Y2k- compliance of the MD-80 aircraft.

Too bad that there's not at least one non-compliant computer -- the one between him and the internet.

-- Mikey2k (mikey2k@he.wont.eat.it), February 11, 2000.

Mickey Mouse the toy plane enthusiast doesn't have the intellect to understand that the computer systems on these planes exist, even when he is shown pictures of them, so he asks for part numbers which he knows are impossible to get.

Proof positive that he has the mental capacity of a 4 year old.

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), February 11, 2000.

Now the snot admits that there are no non-compliant chips since the part numbers "are impossible to get". Yes I knew that, and now I have your admission.

Hawk the troll.

Children... STOP IT!

If "anyone" knows with certainty about the MD-80's... then prove it! If you "suspect" it then say that. Truth is... we many NEVER know. But squabbling like a couple of 4-year-olds is just plain stupid!

*Sheesh*

Time outs for both of you kidlets! Go to your rooms.

And HAWK wash that mouth out with soap! Your really VULGAR post was deleted by one of the Sysops, and offended many regulars. There is NO reason to be that offensive! GI? Clean up your act!

'Nuf said.

Diane, why didn't you delete the posts where Mikey started the offensive language by calling me a snot, phlegm-hawker, birdbrain and the like? In my view these names are clearly derogatory, and no less offensive than what I said.

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), February 13, 2000.

And perhaps we could continue to other posts where Hawk called other people liars. Also the posts where he accuses the NTSB of coverups.

Heck, maybe it would be simpler just to delete all the threads that Hawk started.
