120,000 homeless in killer floods By Christopher Munnion in Johannesburg
AMID South Africa's worst floods for 20 years, Kruger National Park appealed yesterday for national disaster status.
The plea came after rising waters washed away roads and bridges and forced the closure of camps for visitors. The floods have left more than 60 people dead and some 120,000 homeless in Mozambique, northern South Africa and southern Botswana and forecasters said the rain would continue for several days.
British tourists were among 200 visitors who had to be rescued in the Kruger Park after torrential rains cut off some remote camps. The southern section of the game reserve was among the worst hit areas. A park official said that most wild animals seemed to know instinctively when the rivers were rising and had taken refuge on higher ground.
Squatter families were moved from the banks of the swollen Juksei River which flows through Alexandra township in Johannesburg. Two children were feared drowned in Mamelodi township, Pretoria.
