Operators recited messages as if they were
pre-recorded to keep the calls short. And if
they were challenged by callers, they simply
repeated the message "parrot fashion".

When the number of calls reaches a set level,
an automated answering system is supposed
to kick in.

But technical problems meant the system
broke down over Christmas and New Year.

spider, anyone who has called a pharmceuitical company for further information will learn that all they do is read from the literature-- as if you can't read.
