(Posting this as "Non-Y2k" until more info is found. I want to find out if Washington state is having Y2k software problems like those in Maryland. Six Maryland counties reported glitches with a new voter registration system.)

Punch cards just a memory

The Skagit County Elections Office is spending about $200,000 this year for a new tabulation system and voter database that will change the way voters cast their ballots in the Feb. 29 presidential primary and thereafter.

From now on, area voters will cast their ballots by filling out a bubble with a pencil or pen, similar to a school test, rather than using the traditional punch cards and pins.

And elections officials hope the new equipment will signal a new era for an office troubled in recent months by vote-counting delays, software failures and bad feelings among some department workers.
