I had also thought that this might be a test, but I would expect a test to be against a limited number of sites...unless the test is to determine vulnerabilities. In that case, the attacker must consider that the sites will be hardened in the near future...and similar attacks may not work as well.

Today the "attacks" -- if they are not simply routers going out, as pliney the younger proposed -- "advanced" from merely commercial sites to a brokergae site: e-trade went down. My inclination is to look for a technical explanation, but the news stroeis this morning amplified the "hacker" explanation by declaring that the hacking was conducted through "large computers" in Boston and New York.
