Delta Air Lines to give PCs to employees

ATLANTA, Feb. 4 (UPI) - A day after Ford Motor Co. offered its 370,000 employees computers and Internet access for $5 a month, Delta Air Lines Friday became the latest major U.S. corporation to offer PCs to workers at minimal cost.

Delta, named the Best-Managed major Airline for 1999 by Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine, is partnering with PeoplePC Inc. to offer home computers, monitors, speakers and Internet access for no more than $12 a month for 36 months.

PeoplePC is expected to provide hundreds of thousands of 500 megahertz, Hewlett-Packard computers with 64 megabytes of RAM to Ford employees over the next few years. Ford also is throwing in a color inkjet printer.

Delta employees will be offered their choice of Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM or Toshiba computers.

"We have developed this wired workforce program in conjunction with PeoplePC because we believe that personal computers are not only basic business machines, they are also excellent and essential communications tools for the 21st century," said Delta chairman and chief executive officer Leo F. Mullin.

Internet access will be through Deltanet, the company's intranet provided by AT&T services.

Delta employees who already own home computers will be offered free hookups to Deltanet.

PeoplePC offers a computer, monitor and Internet service to the public for $25 a month for 36 months including shipping costs. -- Copyright 2000 by United Press International. All rights reserved. --------------------------
