Residents in two South Memphis neighborhoods were evacuated from their homes for short periods Wednesday because of gas line breaks.

A natural gas line ruptured about 8 p.m. at Basic Automation, 1581 Gaither. A Fire Department hazardous materials team responded and helped evacuate about 30 residents for 35 to 45 minutes, said Battalion Chief Don Powers.

The cause of the rupture was unknown, he said.

Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division crews arrived shortly after the call came in at 8 p.m. and shut off the valve.

Earlier in the day, workers hit a gas line in the area of Prospect and the Illinois Central Railroad. A Fire Department hazardous materials team responded just before noon, and about 200 people were evacuated until about 1 p.m.
