Business community braces for Y2K

ATLANTA - As the world breathed a collective sigh of relief this weekend, the state's business community braced for the first day back after the New Year that supposedly was bringing the Y2K bug with it.

State officials reported only two Y2K glitches this weekend - a fingerprint identification system run by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation shut down for an hour and a half Saturday, and a GBI system used for filing crime reports went down for an hour on Friday.

Both systems were still running yesterday, and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency closed its state operations center yesterday afternoon, but workers were still on call. The center was to reopen at 6 a.m. today to handle any calls associated with the opening of the business day.

''We'll be watching businesses, of course, but we'll be keeping a close eye on state agencies,'' GEMA spokesman Ken Davis said. ''But I don't think we should be concerned that the small businesses could bring the other ones down.''

...The fourth service offered is access to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). In January 1988, the GBI installed this multi-million dollar computerized system, capable of reading, matching and storing fingerprints for every criminal justice agency in the state of Georgia. Identifiable latent prints are processed through AFIS to search for possible matches against the database of post-arrest fingerprint records maintained by GCIC.
