Improving the Effeciency of a Koolmate 12 volt Refrigerator (Paging Bill Schenker)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

My Koolmate is still running after almost 3 years continual use on 120 volts. Now I'm ready to shoot up its effeciency for 12 volt use. Insulation will make one change. Some company has come out with 1" rigid insulation rated at R50!!!Hmmm, I hope I can find the right dumpster for that stuff. Probably expensive! Don't know the name of the company yet. Origa has come out with a refer system which transfers the heat to the water outside of your boat via (I think) a copper strap. I haven't got a look at one yet. Anyway, I'm going to look at that technology to see if it can be adapted to Koolmates.......For those of you who don't know me, I'm an old prepper and at one time posted here under the moniker of alobar. Some of you used my Logan Bread recipe...Ya'll take care, hear!....Tim

ok, the 1 inch rigid insulation with an R50 rating has my attention.

Is this like the ceramic heat shield from NASA? I did not think you could get any better than R10 in an inch without major expense.

57Hi, tree!...I did a search of the web using Mamma.com and found this link: http://www.glacierbay.com/ultra-r-faq.htm

It sounds like the r-50 panel that Tim mentioned in his post, but I expect the price would be astronomical!

Wish my 85 year old, drafty house had some!!!

waded through the website some, found that a single 30" x 55" panel 32mm thickis priced at $640.50. Ouch...

For a marine application where you had no space to waste, this would be absolutely awsome, and maybe well worth it.

$640 will uy lots of straw......
