``The damaged ferry boat was pulled over and all passengers were evacuated while the Ukrainian ship has been detained for questioning,'' a maritime official in Istanbul told Reuters.

The accident occurred during the evening rush hour, when hundreds of Turks in the commercial capital Istanbul cross by ferry between the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus and avoid congested roads.

Turkey's Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits are among the world's busiest and most treacherous shipping lanes, scene of frequent collisions, sinkings and ships running aground.

Ships use the waterways to transport oil and commodities from Russia and the Caucasus to world markets. Turkey has opposed increasing tanker traffic, citing the danger to some 10 million inhabitants of Istanbul.
