Snow hits South hard

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- More than 400,000 homes in the South were without electric power because of snow and ice on Tuesday, and shivering residents faced the prospect of more wintry weather later this week.

The National Weather Service said a record 18.2-inches of snow was on the ground at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport late Tuesday morning, setting a record for snowfall from a single storm.

Forecasters predicted a chance of light sleet or snow returning to north Georgia on Thursday and Friday and western North Carolina on Saturday. North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt declared a state of emergency to allow use of the National Guard to help electric utilities restore power.

Carolina Power & Light said more than 100,000 customers were without power in North Carolina. Electric cooperatives reported another 60,000 customers were without power because of ice and snow accumulations on power lines.

"As temperatures drop tonight, there is a potential for more power outages," Carolina Power spokesman David McNeal said.

In South Carolina, where the storm dumped more than a foot of snow, 114,000 residents were without power. Governor Jim Hodges delayed the opening of state offices in 38 counties until late morning.

In Georgia, utility officials said it could be until Wednesday evening before power is restored to customers affected by an ice storm that hit the northern part of the state Sunday. Georgia Power said about 60,000 customers were still without power. The utility said it had more than 2,700 people working to restore service.

"There will be people working at all times to get power restored," the utility's Lisa Frederick said.

Electric membership corporations in Georgia reported that 73,000 customers were without power. Emergency Plan Director Jerry Donovan said the corporations had 1,640 people in the field working. He said it was "one of the worst ice storms in memory, in terms of power outages."

Mountainous areas of northern Alabama were also affected by the ice storm. Rural electric cooperatives estimated about 12,500 customers were without power. The governors of Alabama and Georgia made emergency declarations that allowed state personnel and equipment to help local officials clear debris and open roads.

I dunno, but I think @.. was referring to the criticism by self- proclaimed 'pollies' that self-proclaimed 'doomers' wasted money on generators...

The government did say prepared for a 3-day storm....I would say that this is 3-day storm situation... Y2K or no....

Fager,

If you have such animosity toward those with the foresight to prepare, what are you doing here? Trolling, or do you have something to contribute? Sorry, but your attitude belies this possibility.

Please be relieved that most hospitals and nursing homes have generators, so your great Aunt Tillie will survive this one.

Re: the poor. Preps do not need to be expensive. There have been many postings on prepping on a budget.

This article just goes to illustrate the fact that we live in an uncertain world, and that making preparations is a smart thing to do, regardless of Y2K.

I bought a generator and have had disaster supplies since my house fell down on my head during hurricane Andrew. If the only reason you bought a generator was Y2K, you are an idiot.
